Great Live Jazz Choices This Week in Nelson

This is proving to be a full week in terms of opportunities to go and hear great local jazz in pleasant settings including:

  • Out On Bail – Saxophonist, Craig Walters, will be joining Out On Bail at their regular Thursday gig this week (May 8th) at The Honest Lawyer.  Having such a superb musician joining a great local band just has to add up to a fantastic evening of jazz.  They will be starting at their usual time of 6:30pm which is perfect timing to go and enjoy a good meal, good beverages and great music.
  • Hot Pompe – Hot Pompe will be playing Manouche Gypsy jazz at the Sprig & Fern from 7:00pm also on Thursday evening.  The band features Pete Rainey (violin), Paul Gimour (guitar), Dion Momo (guitar), Dean Straker (guitar) and Glenn Common (bass) and Craig Agnew will be joining them on guitar.
  • Katrina Kallil – continues her regular spot at the Rutherford Hotel in the Port O’ Call Bar on Friday evenings from 7 to 10pm with Barry Korcheski on piano and special guests – this Friday superb saxophonist Simon Williams sits in as guest.
  • The Zawa Jazz Trio – will be at Deville Café this Friday (May 9th) at 7 pm.  Zawa Jazz Trio is Dai Minamizawa on piano, Dayna Sanerivi on vocals, and Paul Gilmour on double bass.  They perform Jazz Standards and also add a contemporary twist by jazzing up some well-known pop tunes from the 70s and sprinkling them through the evening.
  • Vocalist, Sophie Ricketts, accompanied by Francis Meria on piano, will present the Saturday Soul Session at Bar Berlin this Saturday from 8:30pm to 10:30pm.
