Good evening - I am writing to sow the seed about a possible 2nd Swing Mapua weekend at Mapua in Feb 2013. This year I notified you about Aspire Big Band coming to Mapua to assist with a major fundraiser. I didn't hear back from anyone connected with Nelson Big Band directly but heard you had played at Summerfest on the Sunday - Aspire Big Band are interested in returning in some capacity - they have an 8 piece band who could do a similar set of events for us with the thought of adding the rest of the big band from members of your band who were interested - perhaps the Friday night event could be the rehearsal and get together - either out here or in town. Could you put this to your organisers and get back to me whether you would be interested in being involved in some way at some time - it is early days and we have time to play around with some ideas. Many thanks = Hillary Gregory

On Thursday 13th January, patrons of the Honest Lawyer were treated to the wonderful artistry of Craig Walters. This giant of the tenor saxophone is currently lead tenor with the James Morrison big band in Sydney, he has played with Mike Nocks Electric Band and has recorded extensively with Don Rader, Bobby Shew and others.
The resident band at the "Honest Lawyer" enjoyed the experience of playing with such a talented professional musician, but it was disappointing that so few jazz fans were in attendance. Next time he visits with his family here in Nelson, the Nelson Jazz Club will endeavour to inform the membership where and when Craig Walters will be performing.

Nelson City Big Band needs trombone players. Rehearsals take place every Monday evening 7.30 until 9.30 under the direction of Mick Dowrick. Rehearsal venue, the Brass Band Rooms at the south side of Trafalgar Park. Some interesting and challenging arrangements to test your chops. Five saxes, three trumpets and a rhythm section in attendance last night (Labour Day) We NEED three trombone players. Come and help us make this a great band.

Come on all you Nelson Jazz Club members, the last four or five Tuesday night jazz club gigs have been very poorly supported. Just the hard core of half a dozen turn up each week. It is really sad that jazz club (musician) members only turn up when they themselves are performing. We all have a choice here, you either support the club activities on a Tuesday night or we will be in danger of loosing the Vic Rose Brew Bar support.

George Jury played some great stuff with the Ga'bor Trio, lastr Tuesday, "Freewheelin" were often wonderfully creative, the Tuesday before, and "Mister Nobody" performed some tremendous original compositions, the week before that!

Come on folks, let us make these Jazz Club nights happen!

Clearly the lack of support of members at both The Prince Albert and lattterly at The Vic would indicate a lack of interest in Open Mic/Have-a Go. Odd that The Uke Ellington Nights attracted the most interest !! Strong calls for a return of that format is worth pursuing as it attracted the public in their droves. Sadly very few of our members bothered to support it. Pride or Attitude !!
