Club Newsletter – July 2008

Hi Everyone
Welcome to the very first Nelson Jazz Club electronic newsletter. This has taken a bit longer to develop than we would have liked, so thank you all for your patience. This will be the first of a regular newsletter update that will keep you informed of what the club and club members are doing.

This year saw two new committee members elected onto the committee with a vision to continue the growth of the Nelson Jazz Club. They are Mike Taylor and David Powdrell. Mike has been a member for quite some years and has been acting as the caretaker of our clubrooms in a small way for the past three years. He joins the committee with a vision to get more interaction between you our members, supporters and the events we help facilitate.

David is also keen in sharing his passion for jazz and has been very active as a front line member of Jada Jazz and one of the most consistent members at our monthly Sunday Social events. We are looking forward to some fresh ideas and energy assisting us.

So welcome to this, the very first Ezine Newsletter brought to you with thanks to Rowena and HotHouse Design. You will also notice a new logo ? a big thanks to Jamie Oehlers who performed in the Jazzfest this year allowing us to use his image.

Along with this, Adrienne and Rowena have been upgrading our website bringing it up to the same professional level that the Woollaston Nelson Jazzfest has come to be known and respected for. Rowena has been working with Hothouse Design for the past few years establishing an image that really identifies this event as the Nelson musical event of the year. Adrienne is one of the unsung and unseen heroes in the club working behind the scenes with her expertise on the Club website. Together Adrienne and Rowena are giving the site a makeover – so watch out for more changes in the weeks to come. This site is designed to be interactive and is made up as a blog so I encourage you to check it out and have your say. Comment on some jazz you have heard and keep other members up to date with what you are doing. We want to encourage members to communicate with other members, which will in turn help grow our membership.

Of course it is the members that make this club. This year we have some very exciting things happening so please encourage as many of your friends to get involved. Remember membership is free for School aged students. Supporters are $10.00 and if you are a musician, singer or even a drummer (I can say that as I am a drummer) then a $30.00 membership gets you use of the club rooms for rehearsals at no extra charge. If you have a band, you are able to rehearse to be included on the gig roster, giving your band good exposure. We are here to encourage members to get involved with Jazz.

Jazz in Nelson is become bigger than Ben Hur and we are getting approached weekly for band information. This year with your help and support we have been emailing requests for groups to all our band leaders and have been supported well by venues such as The Playhouse Caf?. Rob and Sue have been very supportive of the arts and have created a great venue to relax and enjoy fine Jazz. Recently they have had the groups Jada Jazz, Something Else and the Nelson Jazz Club Big Band featured on the last Friday of every month. Big Band
Within this schedule we are looking forward to another great night with the Nelson Jazz Club Big Band on Friday the 29 August. You will need to book a table as the last time they played there it was standing room only. We noticed that all the Jazz concerts of the recent Winter Festival were well patronised, and the inside word is that the Arts Festival in October is going to provide Jazz concerts too. But we all know the Woollaston Nelson Jazzfest for Jan 2nd 2009 will blow the doors off them all and I personally can?t wait. However there is a lot to do before then.

Most of you will know that the Victorian Rose was sold last month and we had our last Tuesday Jazz night on the 24th June. I know you are all waiting to see what we will do now and ask if this may be the end of an era? Yes it is. But it is also the start of something better! We have been in discussion with the new owners for the past two months and are very excited about what is happening. I can tell you that Tuesday night Jazz will remain and will get a long awaited makeover designed to encourage more crowd interaction. The new owners are Mike and Paul whom also own Smugglers in Tahunanui. We are looking forward to the improvements they are making and you are guaranteed the food and service will be excellent!

This new look “The Vic Mac’s Brewbar” have given us an opportunity to promote Jazz even more, and we have been asked to facilitate ALL their live music. We are planning to present great Jazz on Tuesday evenings with this extending to easy listening styles on a Friday or Saturday evenings and Sunday afternoons. We will keep you informed of developments as they happen. All details will be posted on the website with dates and times. If you are interested in being part of this fantastic opportunity please contact me directly by phoning me on 0274453987 or email

There is much to tell and I encourage you more than ever to become involved. We need your help to make this club bigger, brighter and better. We will be continuing our Social Sundays soon so watch this space!

Until next time,

Tony Bowater
