Upcoming Live Jazz

Two great live jazz shows will be available in Nelson during April.

On April 13th, Antipodes will be playing at Fairfield House. The saxophonist Jake Baxendale has played in/fronted several bands at the Nelson Jazz Festival. Antipodes is a collective of New Zealand and Australian jazz musicians playing original compositions that emphasise melody, emotive soundscapes, and an open improvisational aesthetic. The music draws from diverse influences – modern New York jazz meets Swedish indie pop and European free improvised music. Audiences are first drawn in by introspective, timbral improvisations and then set to foot-tapping with danceable beats, songlike melodies and fiery solos. More info available at

Nathan Brown Trio Touring NZ Including a Nelson Stop

The Nathan Brown Trio will be touring NZ October 21st through November 1st.  They will stop in Nelson for a show at Fairfield House on October 29th from 7:30 – 10 pm ($20).  The following is a short bio:

About Nathan Brown and The Nathan Brown Trio “This Is The Moment” album:

Upright bassist and rising jazz star Nathan Brown is one of the most in demand bassist in New York City. As a side man he has performed with an array of world class musicians including Wess “Warmdaddy” Anderson, Randy Brecker, Carl Allen, John Faddis, Wycliffe Gordon, Lewis Nash, and Paquito D’Rivera. He also performs regularly with New York based Australian and New Zealand musicians such as Mark Lockett, Matt Baker, Adrian Cunningham, JC Stylles, and Graeme Norris.

“This Is The Moment” is Nathan’s first attempt at crossing the bridge between side man and front man. For Nathan “This Is The Moment” to step in the spotlight and become recognized as a bandleader and composer in his own right.

For years Nathan’s New York trio (featuring Felix Lemerle on guitar and Peter Traunmuller on drums) have been performing a weekly residency at Cleopatra’s Needle (one of New York’s most widely recognized jazz clubs). Through these weekly shows, the trio’s style began to mature. Nathan is heavily influenced by legendry bassist Paul Chambers, Felix is influenced by the sound of guitarist Grant Green, and Peter is influenced by the drumming style of Philly Joe Jones. The questions inside of Nathan’s head while preparing to undertake this recording project was simple: what if these masters, Paul Chambers / Grant Green / Philly Joe Jones, were alive today? What if they played trio together? What songs influenced by todays music would they perform? With these questions in mind, Nathan set about writing and arranging the original music for the album and carefully selecting the cover songs.
