Most members will be aware that the Victorian Rose hotel has changed ownership and is currently cosed for extensive renovations in July and August. The new owners are very keen to keep Tuesday nights operating as Nelson Jazz Club night once the renovations are completed. In fact, they would be even happier if Tuesday nights became even more ‘clubby’ than before. In other words, a better attendance by club members and more focus on having a fun night rather than a music concert. We have the opportunity to start a new look Tuesday night format to coincide with the refurbished Vic, but it will need your input and your support.

Your committee discussed this briefly and thought we might create a format that was less formal than before and also offered the opportunity for more members to actually join in and perform. We would have a rostered band to anchor the night, then invite members to sit in or to solo. Not an open mike night where anyone can have a go, but a platform for members to show their talents. There will be a bit more organising involved, but Mike Taylor has put his hand up to be the club night organiser for the remainder of 2008. Once we settle on a format that suits both the Vic and us, then it can become a simple task to maintain. Maybe you would like to take it over?

First off, we need to know what it will take you get you along on a Tuesday night given that the Vic will no longer have a public bar atmosphere and will certainly provide excellent meals. Two thirds of our members either play or sing. Are you one of these and would you consider joining in every now and then? As secretary, I am happy to receive your suggestions and comments, good and bad, and to pass your views back to the committee. Anonymously of course.
