So Danco Samba at Bar Berlin, Wednesday June 4th

If you are in the mood to listen and dance to wonderful South American music, then be sure to set aside the evening of June 4th to see “So Danco Samba” who will have you dancing from 1930 to 2230 at Bar Berlin.

So Danco Samba consists of:

Chris Harris  – Trumpet, Percussion, and vocals.
Dai Minamizawa – Piano.
Marcio Molinari – Guitar, Percussion, and vocals.
Hector Chirinos – Percussion and vocals.

So Danco Samba” was created by Chris Harris to offer the Latino and Brazilian community of Nelson a small ensemble that offered a variety of South American dance styles and another opportunity for the community to gather somewhere socially. The band  performs the Samba, Bossanova, Pagode, Gafieira, Forro, Montuno, Mambo, Bolero, Tango, Rhumba, and takes requests.

So Danco Samba“s line-up  can vary according to need and budget, but the core players are Chris Harris (Brass and Percussion/ Musical Director), Dai Minamizawa (Piano/Arranger), Marcio Molinari (Guitar, Percussion, and vocals), and Hector Chirinos (Percussion and vocals). The bands core personnel are (respectively) from New Zealand, Japan, Brazil, and Venezuela.

So Danco Samba” appeared  most recently at the opening of the Brazilian Reel Film Festival,  at the closing of the Film Festival, and currently has bookings around the Nelson/Picton area. While the band caters musically to the South American/Cuban community, anyone is welcome to gigs  and will enjoy the warm but highly energetic atmosphere that is guaranteed!

Great Live Jazz Choices This Week in Nelson

This is proving to be a full week in terms of opportunities to go and hear great local jazz in pleasant settings including:

  • Out On Bail – Saxophonist, Craig Walters, will be joining Out On Bail at their regular Thursday gig this week (May 8th) at The Honest Lawyer.  Having such a superb musician joining a great local band just has to add up to a fantastic evening of jazz.  They will be starting at their usual time of 6:30pm which is perfect timing to go and enjoy a good meal, good beverages and great music.
  • Hot Pompe – Hot Pompe will be playing Manouche Gypsy jazz at the Sprig & Fern from 7:00pm also on Thursday evening.  The band features Pete Rainey (violin), Paul Gimour (guitar), Dion Momo (guitar), Dean Straker (guitar) and Glenn Common (bass) and Craig Agnew will be joining them on guitar.
  • Katrina Kallil – continues her regular spot at the Rutherford Hotel in the Port O’ Call Bar on Friday evenings from 7 to 10pm with Barry Korcheski on piano and special guests – this Friday superb saxophonist Simon Williams sits in as guest.
  • The Zawa Jazz Trio – will be at Deville Café this Friday (May 9th) at 7 pm.  Zawa Jazz Trio is Dai Minamizawa on piano, Dayna Sanerivi on vocals, and Paul Gilmour on double bass.  They perform Jazz Standards and also add a contemporary twist by jazzing up some well-known pop tunes from the 70s and sprinkling them through the evening.
  • Vocalist, Sophie Ricketts, accompanied by Francis Meria on piano, will present the Saturday Soul Session at Bar Berlin this Saturday from 8:30pm to 10:30pm.

Freewheelin’ at Bar Berlin Wednesday, May 7th

Freewheelin’ will be playing at the monthly Jazz Club gig at Bar Berlin this coming Wednesday 7th May from 8:00pm.

The line-up for the night is Chris Harris on trumpet, Annabel Boyes on tenor sax, Dai Minamizawa on keys, Drew Matheson on drums, and Paul Gilmour on double bass.
