The Rodger Fox Jazz & Blues Gala at the Nelson School of Music on October 28th

As part of the RODGER FOX 40TH ANNIVERSARY SERIES, Rodger Fox will be performing with the Wellington Jazz Orchestra at the Nelson School of Music on October 28th.

Grant Sullivan will appear as a special guest vocalist and featuring from the USA:

Chris Cain

Blues Vocalist / Guitarist – Star of the 2004 and 2005 World Blues Revue

A childhood blues star Cain’s first album “Late Night City Blues” shook the blues world. This outstanding debut project – financed on a shoestring – garnered no less than 4 “W.C.Handy” nominations and immediate international exposure.

Throughout his career he has carefully set the table for a family reunion between those American cousins – blues and jazz. Cain has evolved into a player of such magnitude that Robben Ford – a legendary musician in his own right – regularly uses Chris Cain as his opening act.

Bill Reichenbach

World Acclaimed Bass Trombonist

Bill was educated at the Eastman School of Music where he studied with Emory Remington. He joined the Buddy Rich Big Band before relocating to Los Angeles where Bill has played on at least 1000 records, 600 movies and countless jingles and television shows. Primarily a bass trombone player, Bill also plays tenor trombone, contra bass trombone, euphonium and tuba.

Jon Papenbrook

Power House Lead Trumpet Player

Jon has performed with The Buddy Rich Big Band, Ray Charles, Louie Bellson, Pearl Bailey, Harry James, Bill Watrous, Bobby Shew, Tom Jones, Al Jarreau, Frank Sinatra, Natalie Cole, Rod Steward, Prince, Liza Minelli, Aerosmith and The Temptations.

Bourbon Street Beat at Bar Berlin Wednesday October 2nd

Bourbon Street Beat is back and with new members!  Come and join us at Bar Berlin Wed, October 2nd at 7:30 pm for an evening of fantastic jazz with some of Nelson’s finest musicians.

RE-BIRTH OF THE BOURBON STREET BEAT

Several  Musicians recently new to Nelson are keen to fill the empty chairs.

Ian Clark, Sax and Clarinet,

  • Dai Minamizawa, piano,
  • Raffaele Bandoli, trumpet,
  • Dino Novara bass,

and from the old Band,

  • Ian Nicholas trombone

and Manager

  • Rupert Winter drums,
  • Jane Winter vocals.

Chris Harris , trumpet is helping out on Club night.

The band produced two CD’s. The first one was used to audition Bourbon Street Beat  for the New Orleans Jazz Festival and later in the Eureka California Jazz festival which was accepted in both places, however New Orleans was abandoned due to lack of sufficient finance.

Nelson City Council called Rupert to a meeting to see if we could go to Eureka and finance ourselves. Nelson City Council were told we could.

In 2004 Nelson City Council representatives, along with Our Mayor at the time and the Bourbon Street beat arrived in Eureka. We combined to make an effective gesture of Sister City oneness.

There have been many changes in personnel over the years, however it has always been amazing to see the support our Nelson musicians have given the band.

A Bio for this Band would need a book to include the sheer fun of it. Festivals, Concerts, Charities supported ,visits to West Coast, Queenstown, Blenheim, Wineries, Country parties and un-believable locations the list just goes on…

AND last but certainly not least Jane Winter has given us the use of Soundstage for our rehearsals.

Notes compiled by Rupert Winter

Trombone Player Wanted

The Nelson Dance Orchestra, a new initiative from Chris Harris, our resident virtuoso trumpet player, is looking for a trombone player to join the band.

The band will be playing at local events, the music ranging from early jazz (tailgating) through to more modern dance music.  It is intended that the bands wide repertoire will enable it to cover corporate as well as social events.

The ideal musician would have a love of early jazz, some ability to improvise and want to be part of a fun and enthusiastic band.

Nelson Jazz Club Big Band at the Boathouse Friday, Nov 13th

The Nelson Jazz Club Big Band is giving the public an opportunity to hear the new programme that they will soon be taking to the Christchurch Big Band Festival, at a special performance this Friday night at 7 pm. The evening will feature a healthy dose of dance numbers as well as a selection of charts that have not been played at the Boathouse before. Featured are the sublime vocal talents of Sophie Ricketts, who will perform well-known jazz standards with the backing of the rich big-band sound. All door sales will go towards the cost of taking the band to Christchurch for the festival.
