Nelson Jazz Club

The Nelson Jazz Club will be holding its third annual Youth Jazz Competition this Sunday (30 June) at the Boathouse at 326 Wakefield Quay.

The day will start with at 10:30 am with an improvisation Masterclass for all interested musicians taken by visiting Trombonist Scott Taitoko, from Christchurch Jazz School.  The masterclass is free for students and Jazz Club member participants (a gold coin donation is requested for non Jazz Club members), and there is no cover charge for spectators.

The competition will commence at 12:00 and will feature 8 bands from local schools, ranging from 2 piece combos to full size Big Bands.  The judges will be Scott along with Liam Ryan and Annabel Boyes from Nelson.   The competition will finish around 17:00, after which prizes (totaling more than $1000) and a cup (donated by the Nelson Jazz Festival for the best individual performer) will be awarded.  There is no entry fee for bands, and there is no charge for students coming along to watch, however a gold coin donation will be requested from adults to help cover costs.

The day will finish with a concert by the Nelson Jazz Club Big Band from 19:30 to 21:30, featuring Scott. Scott will also be performing with a small combo of some of our best local musicians.  There will be a cover charge of $10 for the concert (no entry fee for students).
